If there's anyone that truly needs no introduction to the followers of this blog, it is home-haunting legends Rot and Bean of <a href="http://www.pumpkinrot.com/">PUMPKINROT.COM</a>.<br />
<br />
I first came across Pumpkinrot in early 2010 at the tender age of 12. I remember trawling through the site like a treasure chest, completely awestruck at the tableau-like beauty of the annual installations, the sculptural detail of each individual prop, and the sheer originality of the entire Pumpkinrot oeuvre. I had only recently discovered the online world of home haunting, let alone begun to dip my toes in it myself, but it was immediately clear to me that this 'Pumpkinrot' existed in a league of their own. Haunting elevated to art - mysterious and magnificent and completely untouchable.<br />
<br />
I became obsessed, a fanboy to the nth degree. So to say that Rot's work was a large influence on The House of Marrow is a colossal understatement. Every prop showcased on this blog is indebted to his innovations, from the torn-gauze finishing touches right down to the rolled newspaper bones. But the inspiration was more than just practical - the works and images presented on Rot's blog and site fundamentally shaped my idea of what Halloween is all about. Growing up in New Zealand, many of the core elements of American Halloween simply aren't part of the equation - the falling leaves, the orange pumpkins, the creeping cold and the growing darkness. Reading Rot's blog every day not only fuelled my love for the holiday, it also helped me to see it in an entirely new light. And it became a dream of mine to spend a Halloween in the US.<br />
<br />
Last October that dream became a reality - and if you'd told 13-year-old Marrow the reason why, he would've either laughed in your face or asked to be put into a seven year coma.<br />
<br />
Several years after I stopped posting on this blog, Rot and I had got in touch over email, and although we weren't really in contact during my House Of Marrow days, it immediately felt like speaking to an old friend. A few emails ended up turning into a lot of emails, and by the time 2018 rolled around, we were scheming together on the theme for that year's Halloween display. At that point all we had was the name, but even the name alone seemed to promise something great and terrible and truly monumental: CHURCH.<br />
<br />
We had talked before about how I'd need to fly over for Halloween one year in the future, but around April or May I started to think that it needed to happen sooner rather than later. There was no reason I couldn't come that year, so why wait? The tipping point for me was probably an email from Rot outlining the concept of the 'angels' - disinterred corpses with their ribs pried open and grave candles flickering in place of their hearts. At that point CHURCH became something too spectacular to miss, and before long I'd booked my flights.<br />
<br />
I've tried many times to write this post since Halloween, and each time I've gotten stuck attempting to put the week at the end of October down in words. My thinking was that if my 13-year-old self knew that the mysterious and almighty Pumpkinrot had collaborated with another haunter, I would want to know every last detail. But after many lengthy and failed attempts at that sort of write-up, I've realised that perhaps those memories are best kept to myself. What I will say is that Rot and Bean are two of the sweetest, coolest, most generous and talented people I've had the pleasure of meeting. Bean wrote somewhere that the two of them "live and breathe Halloween"... and I can testify that this is no exaggeration. They are true keepers of the October flame, and there is absolutely no way that my first American Halloween could have been spent in better company.<br />
<br />
Out of respect for their privacy (and in the interest of living in the moment and all), most of the photos I took over that week were of the mental variety - snapshots of late-autumn magic and home-haunting madness that will exist forever in my mind. But after the three-day construction of CHURCH was over, I did pull my camera out to document what had been created. Most of those shots are compiled <a href="https://pumpkinrot.blogspot.com/2018/11/dark-sacred-energy.html">here on Rot's blog</a>, but I wanted to share three that didn't make it onto the official post. They're more on the behind-the-scenes side of things, but aside from what was mutually identified as <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT8uYkP-HnyUg-9rf_C_IoGYlA582XE_CKg1Bqn2mxZ6iSEigMHiXsrovuTpvBV0YwOgXkf4rZcgbNUzIO2dPj2HojLgwTzSJsihMosoXWfuzCIHO63WejO5IEyC3tHY3eUbYH2_oA2Xc/s1600/IMG_9059a.JPG">The Money Shot</a>, these three photos feel like some of the most special ones to me.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That third photo was taken in the early hours of November 1st, long after the last trick or treaters had come and gone. Rot and I had spent the final hours of Halloween eating leftover candy, nerding out over creating the perfect fog shots for the video, and just soaking up the atmosphere of the night. It was all putting off the inevitable - I don't think either of us wanted it to end, so shutting the lights off was a bit of an emotional ordeal. But as each bulb went out the atmosphere of the haunt changed, until the only ones left were the two blue 'moonlight' spots behind the kings, and the space took on an entirely new energy. Without the obligatory front lighting, the haunt felt dark and mysterious and weirdly real. We sat down on the porch and looked up at the dark silhouettes and beams of 'moonlight' and marvelled at this as a final private iteration of CHURCH... like the directors cut of a favourite movie or an alternate recording of a song.<br />
<br />
On November 1st the display stayed standing, and on November 2nd we made some feeble attempts at beginning the pack-down before I had to say goodbye and head back to the train station to carry on with my trip around the East Coast. It wasn't my first time doing the silent undercover cry in the back seat of an Uber, but they were happy (silent undercover) tears. I left with a booklet of Bean's polaroids, a head from the Corn Witch display and an overwhelming feeling of gratitude to the universe and the gods of home haunting for allowing CHURCH to happen.<br />
<br />
Usually the shine wears off from most experiences once a little time has past, but last Halloween has shown no signs of doing so for me. I remember thinking in the months leading up to October that the plane ticket price had already been worth it in the sheer joy it brought me looking forward to the trip. And now looking back on it is something even more special.<br />
<br />
So here's to CHURCH and to Pumpkinrot and to this beautiful, bizarre, brilliant hobby. This is Marrow signing off for the last time (again). Happy Halloween forever and always!</div>

So I promised myself that 'Epilogue' was going to be the last post on here, but after such a wonderful warm response to that write-up, I couldn't possibly leave it there... so here we are once again. Hello all!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since my last post, I've begun and completed my first year at Elam School of Fine Arts. The course started out rather rocky for me, but I found my feet in the second semester when we finally got the chance to embark upon a proper independent project. It was hugely re-energising, and a whole lot of thoughts started to click into place then. So going into second year now, I am hell-bent on materialising as much new work as I can.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And I've been thinking a lot (perhaps too much) about what kind of work I want to be producing. I'm certainly a different person today to the kid who ran The House Of Marrow blog, but the grotesque and macabre continues to find its way into just about everything I create. And I'll forever be sentimental about rolled newspaper ribcages and paper mache corpse skin... so over the holidays I finally gave in to those old urges.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm not sure where this falls on the spectrum of yard haunting / prop building, but here it is. A bit of the old and a bit of the new. The House of Marrow 2.0 (or something like that).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I intend to set up some sort of web page to store my work eventually, but until then I'm making like a proper art student and finally putting stuff up on Instagram. So for a weird mix of my creative and personal stuff, you can head over to <a href="http://www.instagram.com/theodorehs">instagram.com/theodorehs</a></div>

Well, this is going to be something of a bittersweet post, but it's one that I've been meaning to write up for some time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back in 2013, I came to the realization that I was slowly burning out on the whole Halloween/Haunting thing. I had a few projects that year which kept the blog semi-afloat, such as the 'Skeletons' short film and my final installment of The Backs, but deep down I felt like I was just bailing water out of a sinking ship. So after the pitiful 'trilogy' of posts on Halloween 2013, I decided that I'd just leave the blog to die a quiet death instead of trying to drag things out further.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was sad and a bit scary to leave The House of Marrow behind, because my love for Halloween and horror was such an integral part of myself for so long, but I ended up discovering different ways to channel my creativity. I took up painting and photography at school and started writing and recording music in my own time. I found new things that resonated with me and carved out an identity for myself that was more than just 'The Halloween Boy'. And most recently I ended up living in northern Iceland for 10 months as an exchange student, something which I would never have pictured myself doing a few years ago... at the very least I would've chosen the USA as my host country.<br />
<br />
There were certainly times when I considered returning to haunting. Every so often I'd be struck with inspiration and start designing props
and planning out displays, but nothing ever advanced far beyond that point. As much as I love them, paper-mache ghosts and ghouls feel like already-covered ground to me... so after several years of consideration, I've decided to close this book once and for all.<br />
<br />
The good news is that as one chapter ends, another begins. In just a couple of months I'm going to be moving out of home and starting a four-year degree at a proper art school. I'm beyond excited and I don't know if I'd be heading down this road if it weren't for the creative awakening that haunting and prop-building gave me. So really I'd just like to thank my blog followers and everyone in the haunt community that inspired and supported me through my short-lived adventure with this crazy, wonderful Halloween hobby. I don't know how many of you will end up seeing this, but it truly meant the world to me.<br />
<br />
Happy New Year and Happy Halloween for all to come,<br />
Theo (Marrow)</div>

<i>“And I tell you,
it was way, way out in the middle of nowhere. Weren’t no road or path for miles around and yet there they were. Masks and pumpkins and scraps of cloth floating in the breeze. </i><i>And all of them standing
and hanging and waiting in this clearing, like some sort of ritual thing. Like
an offering to some unholy god. And then, as the sun went down over that hill, it was like someone held a matchstick up to the gasoline clouds and the sky turned this fiery orange. And at the same time, this horrible ringing sound started in my ears and then the leaves on the ground rose up like a tornado in slow motion and just sort of hovered there in midair. And all of them ghost things hanging from the bare branches turned around and faced me with their hollow eyes in their flat white faces and I was gone. I ain't never run so fast in my life."</i><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I was planning on making a celebratory 1st of October post, but it appears that the date has snuck up on me and slipped by unnoticed, so this is a little late. Feels strange that it's less than a month until Halloween and I'm not working furiously on props and preparing for the big day. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm scaling back a<i> lot</i> this year. I have this weird constantly-lingering guilt about not doing much propwork or blogging, but otherwise it's been a nice and (mostly) relaxing 10 months.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm currently halfway through a two-week school holiday, which has been pretty busy so far. We decided to give my bedroom a complete makeover - painting over the weird blue walls, tearing up the worn and paintstained carpet, shifting and getting rid of furniture... It's brighter now and feels much more clean and spacious. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves...</div>
</div>

I also did an interview with the awesome Damian of the awesome '<a href="http://halloweenut.blogspot.com/">Misadventures of the HalloweeNut</a>' blog several weeks ago as part of his '<a href="http://halloweenut.blogspot.co.nz/search/label/13%20Days%20of%20Halloween">13 Days of Halloween</a>' series. It was heaps of fun and got published on his blog a few days ago. Click below to check it out:</div>

Sorry about the lack of activity lately. The blog's been pretty quiet since Halloween last year and is probably going to stay that way for a while. It's not that I've been keeping secrets - I just haven't done any prop-work since The Backs. Still not quite sure what's happening this Halloween. I know I'm not going to be doing any sort of public display. I've got a short video planned that I'd like to get started on soon, and hopefully by Halloween I'll have one or two props built and photographed to accompany it in some sort of disjointed blog post. Can't really guarantee anything at the moment.</div>

One thing I <i>do</i> have to show for my absence is 'If It Were Stine' - a Tumblr blog I set up several weeks ago. I have a special place in my heart for R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series, and I thought it would be fun to turn some of my favorite horror films into Goosebumps covers. Well, the first one came out much better than expected and I decided to set up a blog. Tumblr is rife with <a href="http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/minimal%20movie%20poster">fan-made posters</a>, <a href="http://moviebarcode.tumblr.com/">movie barcodes</a> and <a href="http://moviesincolor.com/">cinematography palettes</a>, so I figured my Photoshop experiments would fit right in.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I decided to go for a sparse black&white look. While it took some serious custom CSS to get the static sidebar working on all browsers, I'm really happy with how it's come out. Since the normal archive widget wouldn't fit anymore, I've created a new Archive page, and an About page to go with it. The Archive is still under construction (it's takes ages to code all those links), and I'll probably be forever updating the music/movie lists in the About page, but I figure this design will be here to stay for a while.<br />

Setting up <a href="http://marrowhouse.blogspot.co.nz/2012/04/backyard-haunted-trail.html">The Backs</a> today. I'm going for a sparser, less overgrown look this year - although, that's not to say it won't be featuring new props. I'll be taking photos at late afternoon and then again once darkness has fallen, They should be posted up here in the next few days. Till then, Happy Halfway-to-Halloween...</div>

In light of recent events, I felt that now would be an appropriate time to finally get on with it.<br />
<br />
When I first set up my blog back in September 2010, I never figured anyone would end up seeing it. I didn't even bother to make the obligatory 'first post' post. Just under a month later, I got my first comment from Pumpkinrot. Incredibly excited, I wrote an exceptionally embarrassing reply. I soon discovered <i>another</i> comment that was infact posted a week earlier than Rot's. I learnt then that nothing went unnoticed on the internet, and also that there was a comment notification tool in the Blogger settings.<br />
<br />
Looking back on where I was then, I couldn't be more grateful for all the support and encouragement I've gotten over the past few years. I want to thank my blog followers and commenters, and all the friendly folk over at hauntforum.com for your endless praise and enthusiasm. It's you guys that keep me going, and for that, I am infinitely grateful.<br />
<br />
I'd also like to thank all of the bloggers (and vloggers) who've featured my props and linked to my blog. It's always such an awesome and gratifying feeling to get a spotlight on someone else's blog. While writing this post, I tried searching to find all the blogs that have featured me in the past but got freaked out that I'd overlook or forget some. I guess you know who you are.<br />
<br />
Finally, I'd like to give a special thanks to Spooky over at <a href="http://www.spookyblue.com/">spookyblue.com</a>. His site was the one that got me into prop-building in the first place, and he featured my blog when it was still in the foetal stage. Since then, we've been keeping in email contact. Kind, helpful, enthusiastic and endlessly supportive, he has been a true mentor to me.<br />
<br />
But what's a whole lot of thankyous without returning the favour? <a href="http://cityofthedeath.blogspot.com/">Necropolis</a> is a freshly-hatched blog run by a friend of mine - '<i>Cadaver</i>'. I first met him because he was the younger brother of a friend (by two years), and on October 31st 2011, he and his brother showed up at my Halloween display. He was fascinated by the props and set-up, and decided to try it out for himself. His older brother and I parted ways a while ago when we went off to different high schools, but he and I keep in close email contact. He sends me photos of props he's working on, I give feedback and advice, we discuss horror movies and prop-building techniques... He's incredibly enthusiastic and seems to be churning out new props every week. He's also started at my school this year, so it's been cool seeing him round. I've recently started nagging him to set up a blog, and, as always, peer pressure triumphs. Be sure to check out his blog - <a href="http://cityofthedeath.blogspot.com/">Necropolis</a>.<br />

</div>
It's dark, it's crazy, it's gritty, it's wildly creative, and while some will say it's impact has faded over time, I still find it shockingly violent. Sam Raimi's '<i>The Evil Dead</i>' is one of my favorite films, and when I saw the <a href="http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3223599/bd-contest-evil-dead-fans-do-you-have-what-it-takes-to-be-the-deadite-of-the-day/">Deadite Of The Day Contest</a> post on bloody-disgusting.com I immediately set to work. I hauled an old prop out of the attic and gave it a complete makeover. A new head, a new arm, a new paint job and a whole lot of angry molesting tree roots. On the weekend, I took it into the forest and filmed it. I got eaten alive by mosquitos and nearly smashed the camera into several trees, but it was great fun. And since The Evil Dead was one of the movies that inspired me to try out filmmaking, I felt I owed it to it.<br />
<br />
I quickly edited the footage together with audio samples from The Evil Dead, uploaded it to Vimeo, and sent it off to bloody-disgusting.com for consideration on Monday night. My parents woke me up early on Wednesday morning with exciting news. The article pretty much speaks for itself, so click below for the link:<br />

Needless to say, it was incredible to see myself of Bloody Disgusting. I've been checking their site daily for two years, so it was nothing short of surreal to see my name and prop on their headlines. And I keep thinking about all the people that may or may not end up seeing it (do horror directors check Bloody Disgusting?).<br />

Anyway, here's the video, titled 'The Woods Themselves' - my love letter to Sam Raimi's original 'The Evil Dead'.<br />

I've always been a huge movie fan, and I've always been fascinated by the film-making process. I never rent a DVD without watching the special features. I love reading interviews with my favourite directors, and I'll often rewatch movies with the commentary on as I work on props or other such things. I never really thought about making my own movies until I saw The House Of The Devil. I've warbled and raved extensively about this film before, but for whatever reason, it really struck a chord with me. I made a few (very) short films since then, mostly just shot by myself on one night. And I found that I liked doing it quite a lot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over the past while, I've been working on making a 'proper' short film. I wrote a script, drew out a storyboard, built props and makeshift camera dollies, and convinced my dad to play the lead (and only) role. We worked till late many nights - it's worth noting that it's summer over here, which doesn't help when you have to film everything after dark (a quick shout-out to my mother and sister, who'd let us kick them out of the living room nearly every night for filming). After many, many hours of filming, re-filming and re-re-re-filming, we finally finished. I've spent the last week or so writing and composing music for it. When I say writing, I mean poking at the piano keys until something nice came out, and when I say composing I mean putting my sister's laptop on top of the piano and recording from the tiny in-built microphone straight into iMovie. Overall, it's been a fantastic and fun experience, albeit with an enormous amount of help from my dad, who happily and enthusiastically complied with my stupid perfectionism, proved to be quite knowledgeable about film-making and let me advertise him as a remorseful child murderer on the internet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm thrilled to announce the beginning of my (very) amateur 'production company' Geisterbahn Pictures, and to debut my first film - Skeletons. It's set on the night before Halloween, and revolves around a reclusive haunter who gets a late-night visit from what appears to be a trick-or-treater.<br />

I had recently finished building a witch and a set of five groundbreakers, and was mourning the fact that Halloween was drawing near and I still had no way to set up a haunt. The front garden on our house was (and continues to be) small, awkward and packed with colourful flowers - not exactly yard haunt material. I had props, ideas and a whole lot of enthusiasm, but no location. Waiting at an intersection, I looked up at the empty shop window. There was no store attached to it - it was simply an empty space with two walls at the back and two huge glass panels at the front. And a sign taped to the glass "<i>Window for Lease - display purposes only</i>." followed by a phone number. I realized then that this was the perfect space for a haunt. Props could be set up inside, lights could be attached to the ceiling, candy could be handed out to trick-or-treaters outside... Over the next month, I obsessed over the window. I left messages on the owner's answerphone, measured the dimensions of the window, planned the whole thing out in my mind... When the owners finally called me up to let me know that the space was not available, it was only a few short days until Halloween.<br />
<br />
I was desperate to find somewhere to set up a haunt. And furious at the shop-owners for taking so long to reply. Then my dad had an idea. My parents used to live next to a lovely lady called Jeanie. She runs a neat little florist/gift shop which is open from Thursday to Saturday every week. She also owns a small building next to it that she uses as a workshop and storeroom. A small building with <i>three huge glass panels on it</i>. We called her immediately and she (very) kindly offered to lend me the window for Halloween free of charge. Dad and I spent the next few days frantically setting up the display. We shifted boxes and tables. We hung black cloth from wires to make a background. We drove to and from our house and the window, the car loaded with groundbreakers and branches and bags of pine needles. On Halloween night, we turned on the string of coloured lightbulbs, turned up the dark ambient music and waited for the trick-or-treaters. I handed out candy, took mountains of photographs and video, and generally had a blast. On the afternoon on November 1st, as we were packing up the display, I was already planning for next year.<br />
<br />
2011 was very different for me, mostly because I had an entire year to plan the display. I changed my mind a lot about the theme for the haunt, until in June I finally settled on the black-plague-mass-grave idea. While 2011's haunt admittedly followed the same formula as 2010's (faux forest + magical being + groundbreakers), I could focus on planning and creating a cohesive, themed display and I finally felt like I was building props for a purpose.<br />
<br />
2012, however, was a huge step away from what I had done before. The abandoned-ghost-train idea came to me in December and stuck partially because I wanted to avoid changing it at the last minute again, and because it really struck a chord with me. I had always had an intense fascination with ghost trains ever since reading the book '<a href="http://marrowhouse.blogspot.co.nz/2011/02/deep-in-amazing-arty-bees-bookshop-you.html">Come For A Ride On The Ghost Train</a>' when I was 4 years old. It also meant that I could combine 'real' props (the witch and the dead twins) with intentionally tacky ghost-train-props. The build for 2012 was a pretty huge challenge, and I had an enormous amount of help from my dad. The cart was tricky - we built the main structure out of cheap MDF, and I constructed the giant skull from cardboard and paper-mache - it had to be cut in half just to get it out of my bedroom door. Making feet and legs for the twins was a bit of a nightmare, and something I had never done before. The ghost-train track had to be built from scratch. The walls that make up the background were made out of MDF as well. We set them up in my bedroom, where I painted, repainted and weathered them, ready to take apart and re-assemble in the shop window. While 2012's haunt was much more challenging, practically, than the previous year's, I spent an equal amount of time and effort focusing on the details of everything. I spent an insane amount of time obsessing over the spinebones on the twins, the shade of green on the cart, the faux water-damage on the walls, the rust on the tracks... I made little posters to tape up on the window to explain the backstory to trick-or-treaters and passersby. I carefully arranged ivy, tree branches and debris around the display.<br />
<br />
Halloween night itself was far busier than the previous year's. A highly-toxic combination of photo-taking, small-talk, excitement and exhaustion was nearly the death of me. At one point I quietly snuck away and sat down for a while for fear of fainting. When the people died away, I took a few pathetic minutes of video footage... and then we tore down the display. Jeanie needed her workshop back in the morning, so we spent the early hours of November 1st packing up the props, taking down the walls, moving boxes back into place... When the sun rose that Thursday morning, the florist next door was open, Jeanie was trimming and arranging flowers in the workshop and there was no sign of any ghost trains, witches or rotting corpse twins. And as the universe would have it, Halloween shifts forward a day every year, meaning that October 31st, 2013 will fall on a Thursday, the florist's workshop on the corner will be in full swing, and there will be no Halloween display. Or the year after that. Or the year after that.<br />
<br />
I'm still not sure what the future holds for my haunt. I'm not looking to do another window display. If I end up doing <i>anything</i> this Halloween, it'll probably be something more low-key. I haven't been working on any props, and I don't really have any intention to right now. What I <i>can</i> tell you is that I will be building a few new props for '<a href="http://marrowhouse.blogspot.co.nz/2012/04/backyard-haunted-trail.html">The Backs</a>' this year. After three years of solid Halloween obsession, I feel like it's time to take a break. Blog posts will probably be spotty for a while. But who knows, maybe I'll have a change of heart and dive headfirst into fanatical prop-building in a couple of months. After all, I do<i> love</i> Halloween. And I do <i>love</i> sitting in my room and watching horror movies as I assemble ribcages out of newspaper. This is not the end of The House Of Marrow. And this 'break' of mine is not going to last forever. I guess old habits die hard.<br />

The ghost train stood in the center of the abandoned amusement park, flooded in moonlight. The wooden beams holding up the front facade had begun to collapse. The once vibrant skeletons and ghouls that adorned the walls and roofs were now cracked and faded. Ivy crawled over the walls. Trees had grown up through the holes in the rotting floorboards, branches twisting through the tunnels and rooms. The years of rain and sea spray had rendered the building a sad ghost of its former self. There was no denying that the place was spooky. Most of the town kids had heard stories about the old ghost train being haunted, but very few knew the truth about what happened there many years ago, one fateful Halloween night. Rummaging through a pillowcase bloated with candy, Elliot's older brother, Owen, produced an orange flashlight. Holding the glowing torch beneath his face, features shadowed and skewed, he spoke in a deep and mysterious voice.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"On a dark Halloween night, many years ago, two kids - nine year old twins - were finishing up a long evening of trick-or-treating. Reluctant to call it a night, they decided to walk home through the amusement park. It was nearly closed, and they were the only kids there. That was when they spotted the ghost train. Neither of them had any money, so when the owner wasn't looking, they snuck into one of the carts, and disappeared into the darkness of the ghost train. And they never came out..."<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Owen paused for a moment, and then, words dripping with melodrama, continued with the story. "They were halfway through the ride when the lights turned off and the cart crashed to a halt. As the twins sat in darkness, the owner, unaware that the twins were in the ride, locked up the ghost train and drove home. The mechanically locked seatbelts that lay tight across the twins' waists wouldn't budge an inch. As hard as they tried, they couldn't wriggle out of the cart. That night, the ghost train owner died in his sleep, and the ghost train was left to rot. And so were the twins..."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Elliot glanced over at the crumbling building, which now looked more like a tomb than a theme park ride. "But the story doesn't end there. One November night, a witch laid eyes upon the empty ghost train and decided to take up residence there. I mean, what better a home for a witch than an abandoned ghost train? So she must have been delighted to find the two children waiting for her. No-one knows if they were dead by the time she got there. Some say they had died of starvation. Others say they were poisoned by the witch. And some say the witch slit their throats right open...” He grinned, running a finger
from his left ear to his right.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Well, eventually the entire theme park went under, and the rides were all shut down. Some of them have been demolished, but the ghost train remains. And so do the witch and the two dead twins... But on every Halloween night, every year, the witch brings them back to life. The twins, <i>and</i> the ghost train. The lightbulbs glow with a supernatural energy. The rusting mechanisms jerk back to life. The ghost train props awaken, animatronics creaking into motion... And the twins, imprisoned in the rotting carcasses that used to be their bodies, are forced to ride the ghost train... Round and round, until sunrise..."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Owen clicked off the flashlight, and the two of them sat there in the murky darkness, hanging off the words, daring each other to move or speak. A cold breeze blew over the park, and a strange sound drew their attention to the ghost train. The structure began to glow with an eerie luminescence. Green light poured from the cracks and holes in the walls, projecting ghostly light onto the sea fog that now swirled around the building. The sounds of the ghost-train echoed through the twisting corridors and out into the chill Halloween night air. The scratching of rusty cogs grinding against each other. The screech of wheels scraping across metal tracks. And rising above the mechanical wails of the ghost train, the bone-chilling cackle of the witch.</div>

I'm thrilled to say that I am currently sitting at the start of both October<i> and</i> a two-week school holiday. That leaves me a whole lot of time for working on props, going on Halloween shopping sprees, watching all my favourite horror movies, listening to Mumford & Sons' fantastic new album and generally enjoying the Halloween season.Marrowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10848313072973179842noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-589968235409815195.post-43577012617444019132012-09-28T19:35:00.000+12:002013-03-19T22:36:42.868+13:00A Dearth Of PumpkinsAs much as I ponder it, I can't think of a way to incorporate jack o'lanterns into my display this year without them feeling out of place. At the very least, this one (paper-mache) jacko will making an appearance.<br />

I decided to look up the film and was blown away by <a href="http://www.movieposterdb.com/movie/1172994/The-House-of-the-Devil.html">the awesome posters</a>, and then again by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsSZGTeyM_Q">the awesome title sequence</a>, and then again by<a href="http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/35248/badass-house-devil-collectible-vhs"> the awesome limited-edition VHS</a>. I went into a state of what the youngsters these days call '<i>extreme fangurlin</i>' - wailing, falling over, hyperventilating, crying, etc...<br />
I managed to sway my parents, and quickly bought a copy of 'The House Of The Devil'. I didn't even rent it first to make sure it was good. Popping it into the DVD player, I knew I was in for a real treat. And I was.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-el2GY1_dCOI/UFmmSlkzHsI/AAAAAAAABwE/5d6MuU27jgM/s1600/house_of_the_devil.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-el2GY1_dCOI/UFmmSlkzHsI/AAAAAAAABwE/5d6MuU27jgM/s400/house_of_the_devil.jpg" width="268" /></a></div>
<br />
From the first frame, 'The House Of The Devil' is a piece of art. The film is styled to look, sound and feel like the low-key horror films of the 70s and 80s - every last detail of it. While the opening credits proudly and loudly announce the retro style early on, it is never overblown, and it never distracts from the actual story. 'The House Of The Devil' is a slow-burning horror flick, with not much happening for most of the running length. Regardless, I never find myself bored watching it. The long, drawn-out sequences feel oddly comfortable, which I feel is helped by the wonderful colour palette and cinematography. Many reviewers and horror fans criticize the film's climax, saying that it is a let-down due to the suspense and build-up beforehand. I couldn't disagree more. The crazy and dizzying final act is the highlight of the film, and something which I have watched over and over.<br />

For many years, I never understood the role of a film director. I always pictured them as someone who bosses the cast and crew around. Of course, I worked out what a director actually does long ago, but I never really<i> understood</i> a director. Watching 'The House Of The Devil', I made a sudden connection. It was a truly epiphanic moment. I realized that 'The House Of The Devil' was not constructed by a myriad of writers, producers and co-directors. Every aspect of the film felt like it was carefully crafted by one singular person. Like the horror-fueled dreams of a creative genius had sprung to life on my TV screen. For the first time, I felt a real connection with the director of a film. I had to find out who this guy was.<br />

This wonderful portrait (couldn't find out who the artist was) pretty much sums up the way I feel about Ti West. He is the writer/director/editor of some of the 2000's finest horror films - The Roost, Trigger Man, The House Of The Devil and The Innkeepers. He is surely one of the best horror directors of the past few decades.</div>

I have yet to see 'Trigger Man', but I can wholeheartedly recommend 'The Roost' and 'The Innkeepers' to any and all fans of horror. 'The Roost' is a crazy and imaginative Evil-Dead-esque affair, presented as part of a late-night horror show. 'The Innkeepers' is an old-fashioned ghost story, full of screams, shivers and (surprisingly) laughs. So get off my blog and go check out his movies. They're awesome.</div>
